Title

CAP/TWCYP Intensive Study Event (ISE)* - “Just sit with it”: how psychoanalytic observation can sustain thinking and containment in educational settings

When

Wednesday 15 November, 13:30 to 16:00

Where

HDS Training Suite, 142 West Nile Street, Glasgow G1 2RQ

Presenter

Fanny Lena

Summary

This presentation will explore the way in which psychoanalytic observation plays a transformative role when we strive to work therapeutically outside the therapy room.

Fanny will draw on her experience of working in a therapeutic educational setting, as well as in mainstream primary schools, to reflect on how the skills we develop through infant observation and work discussion not only deepen our understanding of the internal world of the young people we support, but can also sustain the work of the multidisciplinary team, amplifying the organisation’s capacity for emotional containment, when facing trauma and deprivation.

The talk will include extracts of observations to illustrate how ‘just sitting with’ uncomfortable feelings, paying close attention to the details of human interactions, and to the emotional impact on the observer can shed light on those unconscious processes that often result in ruptures of containment and thinking.
