Summary

In my beginning is my end. In succession
Houses rise and fall, crumble, are extended,
Are removed, destroyed, restored, or in their place
Is an open field, or a factory, or a by-pass.
Old stone to new building, old timber to new fires,
Old fires to ashes, and ashes to the earth
Which is already flesh, fur and faeces,
Bone of man and beast, cornstalk and leaf.

With T.S. Eliot’s lines from East Coker in mind, Katie will be exploring the circularity of endings and beginnings, our defences against the painfulness of loss and the possible resolution of mourning. However, there is no development without loss and not all endings are negative. Katie will give three clinical vignettes which will be a basis for discussion of both endings and experiences of loss that are painfully avoided and also those endings that are a developmental step with reference to psychoanalytic theory.

About the presenter - Katie Lewis

Katie Lewis started her professional life in education, teaching English in a special school. She trained as a child and adolescent psychotherapist at the Scottish Institute for Human Relations (now Human Development Scotland) in Edinburgh. She worked in the NHS for 15 years in a general CAMHS team, in the regional team for autism and in specialist teams for children in the care system and was Consultant/Clinical Lead for Child Psychotherapy in the Trust. She has a long association with the University of Northumbria through the PGDip/MA in Psychoanalytic Observation Studies and the Professional Doctorate. She is an Honorary member of the Polish Society for Psychoanalytical Psychotherapy. For the last six years she has worked in private practice.

• A cancellation can be made up to 4 weeks before the event and a full refund will be issued. 
• After this date, a refund cannot be processed, unless under exceptional circumstances.
• No refund will be issued for non-attendance.
• We can accept substitute delegates at any time, although sufficient notice should be given where possible.
