Volunteers' Week takes place between 1 - 7 June 2020. It's a nationwide opportunity to celebrate and say thank you for the contribution millions of volunteers make across the UK.

At Human Development Scotland (HDS), our volunteers provide vital support in a number of different roles.  We are thankful to all our volunteers, past and present.

One of our volunteers, Lee, shares her experience of volunteering with HDS.

Lee, Marketing & Communications volunteer at HDS

As a Marketing & Communications volunteer, I have supported the organising of events and promoting the professional training courses. Before I came to the UK, I worked for people who experienced homelessness or suffered from mental health in Korea. Therefore, I wanted to further develop my career in these areas whilst living and working in the UK. I’m so happy to have found this opportunity to volunteer with HDS which focuses on mental health.

I have felt that working at HDS is a meaningful experience and it motivates me to develop my knowledge about how to support people who suffer from mental health. This is because the majority of HDS events and training course attendees mainly share their professional knowledge.  Also, I have the opportunity to improve my range of skills including communication, marketing and organisation skills that are valuable in and out of the workplace. I am really enjoying working at HDS. Lee HDS volunteer

I value working as part of the team at HDS - the staff are very caring and inspiring. They make me feel that I am making a worthwhile contribution. Sometimes, I challenge myself to try something different through the voluntary work.  My manager supports me and I feel able to propose new ideas. In addition, we have a regular meeting every two weeks. It makes me not to lose my motivation to volunteer, and I feel I am a part of the team even if I cannot work at the office due to the current restrictions caused by COVID-19.

I am really looking forward to my journey with HDS and I am going to do my best to achieve personal goals and practice using my skills and discover hidden talents.

I would like to say thank you for HDS in giving me this opportunity and for supporting me in my role.
