Summary

This one-day conference will provide a psychoanalytic overview of adolescence and depression and give an insight into how we work with adolescents and their parents and carers. Depression is one of the most common reasons for referral to mental health services, with statistics as high as one in four teenage girls reporting symptoms of depression, with boys not far behind.

A Psychoanalytic Perspective On Depression (Andrew Dawson)

This presentation discusses the psychoanalytic method and research culture in relation to depression.  From a contemporary clinical starting point, the presentation explores the history of depression from a psychoanalytic perspective before exploring the key elements of a psychoanalytic formulation in clinical cases of depression.  Following this, using selected images and literature, participants are invited to consider together the symbolism and metaphors which help us to engage with and think about depression.

The psychotherapy service offers access to a psychoanalytic way of thinking in order to provide added value to the broader work of CAMHS.
